Pinehurst started as a health resort. Ross arrived in 1900, stayed the rest of his life, and made No. 2 the template for American golf: crowns, runoff, wiregrass, no place to hide a missed shot. Payne Stewart won the 1999 Open with a 15-footer on 18. Martin Kaymer lapped the field in 2014. Bryson won in 2024.
