Pine Valley, New Jersey · Parkland · 1918
George Crump · H.S. Colt
Crump spent his fortune on a sandy wasteland in New Jersey. He died before the 18th was done.
George Crump, a Philadelphia hotel man, bought the land in 1913 and lived on it while he routed holes through sand and pines. Harry Colt walked the property. Crump died in 1918 with four holes unfinished; friends finished them. Hell’s Half Acre on the 7th is still the waste bunker people mean when they say waste bunker. The club does not advertise. The photographs — orange sand, a white pin, no mulligans — are why.
