Thomas built a course in a barranca. A century later the Open showed up.

LACC was founded in 1898. The North Course that matters is Thomas and Bell, 1921 — kikuyu, barranca, the Westside pretending it is not a city. Gil Hanse restored it before the 2023 U.S. Open. Wyndham Clark won. The photographs are the North: evening light, a flag, the kind of turf that photographs like velvet if you wait.
